August 21: World Senior Citizens Day
On Aug. 21, we recognize World Senior Citizens Day and celebrate the older adults who enrich our families and communities. Healthy aging includes caring for both the body and the brain. Staying physically active, socially connected and mentally engaged can support overall well-being and quality of life as we age. At the Fixel Institute, we are committed to advancing research, care and education that help people live healthier lives at every age.

August 30: National Grief Awareness Day
On Aug. 30, we recognize National Grief Awareness Day, a time to acknowledge the many ways people experience and navigate grief. Grief can follow the loss of a loved one, but it can also accompany changes in health, independence, abilities or everyday life. For individuals and families affected by neurological conditions, these experiences can be especially complex. Today serves as a reminder to approach those experiencing grief with compassion, patience and support, and to recognize that there is no single timeline or “right” way to grieve.

August 12th: Wellness Wednesday
Join the UF Health Multiple Sclerosis Program for Wellness Wednesday, a series designed to bring the MS community together for an evening of education, connection and support. Patients, families and caregivers are invited to learn, connect with others and engage with the UF Health MS community. Upcoming Wellness Wednesday events will be held Aug. 12, 2026; Nov. 11, 2026; and Feb. 10, 2027, at 6 p.m. in the main lobby of the Fixel Institute.

September 15: Start & Spark
Start & Spark is a discussion series designed to ignite thoughtful conversation and fresh thinking around timely topics in neuroscience and neurological care. Each session brings together faculty, researchers and clinicians to explore big ideas, challenge assumptions and discuss complex or unresolved questions. Rather than a traditional lecture, Start & Spark emphasizes open conversation and differing perspectives, creating opportunities for new insights, connections and collaboration across the Fixel Institute and broader University of Florida community.
The Fixel Institute is thrilled to feature Dr. Kelly Foote on Tuesday, September 15th!
Join us from 4:30-5 p.m. for food, drinks and snacks and 5-6 p.m. for the Start & Spark program.

September 16-18: DBS Think Tank
The Fixel Institute is hosting the annual Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) Think Tank, a globally recognized gathering of leading experts in neuromodulation. Since its founding in 2012, this collaborative forum has brought together clinicians, researchers and engineers from across academia, industry and clinical practice to explore the latest advancements, address emerging ethical considerations and shape the future of DBS technology.
With a dynamic, discussion-driven agenda, the Think Tank fosters meaningful dialogue on cutting-edge research and novel applications for neurological and psychiatric conditions, including Parkinson’s disease, depression and more. By encouraging open exchange and international collaboration, both in person and virtually, the DBS Think Tank continues to advance innovation and expand the impact of DBS for patients worldwide.

Yoav Piura, M.D. We are pleased to welcome Yoav Piura, M.D., to the Fixel Institute. Dr. Piura specializes in behavioral neurology and neuroimmunology, with expertise in dementia and neurodegenerative disease. At UF, his clinical and research work will focus on improving the early and accurate diagnosis of dementia, including the use of blood-based biomarkers and identification of treatable causes.

Mitchell Robbins, P.T., DPT, OCS
Mitchell Robbins, DPT, holds a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree and brings six years of experience treating vestibular and balance disorders. At the Fixel Institute, Mitchell will focus on the evaluation and treatment of patients with movement disorders, vestibular conditions, post-concussive symptoms and neuroimmunological disorders.

Delaney Mhesky, MA, CF-SLP, MT-BC
Delaney Mohesky, SLP, holds a master’s degree in communication sciences and disorders. After previously completing an internship at the Fixel Institute, we are pleased to welcome her back as a colleague. Delaney also has experience in music therapy and is a certified neurologic music therapist. At Fixel, she will focus on motor speech, cognition and swallowing disorders across the patient populations we serve.

Research & Technology Innovation Incubator Underway!
The second floor of the Fixel Institute Research & Administration building is being transformed into the Research & Technology Innovation Incubator (RTII). A state-of-the-art hub designed to spark collaboration and accelerate discovery in neurological care. During this time, the second floor will be closed to employees, with restrooms and water fountains available on the first floor only. We look forward to sharing updates as the RTII takes shape and ushers in a new era of innovation at the Fixel Institute.
