At the UF Norman Fixel Institute for Neurological Diseases, our multidisciplinary Huntington’s disease team—led by Dr. Nikolaus McFarland—provides comprehensive care and support for individuals and families affected by HD. Because HD impacts not only the person diagnosed but their entire support network, we aim to be part of your “village,” offering guidance, resources, and coordinated care.
Genetic testing for HD is a thoughtful, multi-step process involving emotional, financial, and family considerations. Before testing, patients meet with experienced professionals to review these factors and understand what to expect.
This page offers an overview of the HD genetic testing process, key information to know beforehand, and a downloadable guide with additional details.
Testing Process
Our HD clinic follows the guidelines for genetic testing recommended by HDSA:
- An evaluation by an HD expert and receiving both pre- and post-test genetic counseling are strongly recommended for all patients undergoing testing.
- We highly recommend that you bring a support person as this is a highly emotional process and it is helpful to have a companion. We recommend bringing someone who is not at risk for HD such as a spouse, unaffected parent, or friend. We do not recommend bringing children or siblings.
- Testing is a very personal decision, and you may choose to stop the process at any time, including postponing learning test results.
- Results are provided via a face-to-face, confidential visit, with our physician and genetic counselor so you can ask questions and receive support. We will not provide results over the phone.
