ALS clinic at Fixel Institute named a Certified Center of Excellence

By: Mallory Bachmann

The Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Clinic at the Norman Fixel Institute for Neurological Diseases at UF Health has been officially recognized as a Center of Excellence by the ALS Association. This designation reflects the clinic’s adherence to the program’s standards, including the expertise of its clinical team, the number of patients with ALS served, active involvement in ALS research, strong collaboration with community partners and comprehensive access to health care.

ALS is a progressive disease affecting the nerve cells in the brain, brain stem and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement. While symptoms most commonly appear after age 50, the disease can also begin earlier in life.

Led by James Wymer, M.D., Ph.D., with support from associate director Whitney McNeely, APRN, the clinic provides an integrated model of care. Its multidisciplinary team includes neurologists, nurse practitioners, care coordinators, occupational and physical therapists, speech-language pathologists, dietitians, respiratory therapists, social workers and research coordinators. This team delivers individualized, evidence-based care for patients living with ALS.

This recognition reflects a commitment the team has prioritized from the start. As Dr. Wymer explains, “Our team has always been focused on providing the best care. We approached this as a process to further our goal of improved patient care.”

As a newly recognized Center of Excellence, the clinic remains committed to enhancing quality of life by offering personalized care plans, assistive technologies and supportive therapies that promote independence and well-being. Patients also benefit from access to the latest FDA-approved treatments and opportunities to participate in cutting-edge clinical trials aimed at slowing disease progression and managing symptoms effectively.
