At the Norman Fixel Institute for Neurological Diseases at UF Health, nursing is more than a profession, it’s the compassionate backbone of our multidisciplinary care model.
Fixel nurses play an integral role in the coordinated, patient-first approach that defines our clinic. Working alongside neurologists, therapists, dietitians, and social workers, our nurses ensure that every patient is seen, heard, and cared for from every angle. They are often the first point of contact during appointments, the voice on the phone when questions arise, and the steady presence during life-changing moments.
Their work touches every corner of the patient experience, from managing complex care plans to offering a reassuring hand during difficult conversations. It’s this balance of clinical expertise and heartfelt compassion that makes Fixel nurses so special.
“At the Fixel Institute, our nurses are the soul of our patient-first mission. Their compassion, clinical skill, and unwavering dedication are what allow us to deliver truly life-changing care. We are endlessly grateful for the work they do every single day,” said Michael Okun, MD, Director Norman Fixel Institute for Neurological Diseases at UF Health.

This Nurse Appreciation Week, we celebrate the incredible individuals who go above and beyond every single day. Here are just a few glowing examples of our nurses going above and beyond.
🩺 Jessica Chausse is known for her teamwork and adaptability. “She communicates effectively with the team and is always willing to help wherever she is needed,” a colleague shared. Her behind-the-scenes support helps the clinic flow smoothly for patients and providers alike.
🩺 Tamia Williams stood out many times, “I don’t know you, except for this week,” wrote one colleague, “but from what I’ve seen… YOU ARE A ROCKSTAR!” Tamia’s dedication and presence made an immediate impact.
🩺 Tamara Crittenden-Jones, Tamia, and others were quick to respond during a medical event in clinic. As Irene Malaty, MD, recalled, “They didn’t think twice; they were just on top of it, calmly and professionally.” Their swift, collaborative response speaks volumes about the trust and unity that defines our care model.
🩺 Christopher Myers exemplified thoughtful, clear communication when he calmly handled a patient call, ensured everything was documented, and relayed it to the triage team, demonstrating how even small actions make a big difference.
At Fixel, nurses aren’t just part of the care team, they are central to the entire patient journey. Their role in our integrated clinic model helps reduce appointment fatigue, streamline care, and offer the emotional support that patients and families need when facing complex neurological diagnoses.

They’re the ones helping a family understand new equipment. They’re comforting a patient after a tough day. They’re quietly celebrating a win, no matter how small, with a smile or a shared moment of hope.
This week, we thank every Fixel nurse for their heart, their professionalism, and their deep commitment to our mission.
You are the heartbeat of our care. Happy Nurse Appreciation Week.
